In Lesson 1 you learned to be. Now meet the second essential verb: to havea avea in Romanian. You use it to talk about possession: things you own, family members, qualities.

SubjectVerbExampleRomanian
IhaveI have a car.Eu am o mașină.
YouhaveYou have a dog.Tu ai un câine.
He / She / IthasShe has a cat.Ea are o pisică.
WehaveWe have a big house.Noi avem o casă mare.
You (plural)haveYou have two tickets.Voi aveți două bilete.
TheyhaveThey have a garden.Ei au o grădină.

💡 The One Rule

Like is with "to be", has is only for He, She, It — and single names.
Everything else uses have.

"Maria has a red bag."  /  "Ion and Maria have a red bag."

Negative – Don't have / Doesn't have

To say you do not have something, use don't have or doesn't have.

PositiveNegative
I have a car.I don't have a car.
She has a dog.She doesn't have a dog.
They have a garden.They don't have a garden.
Romanian note: "Don't" = nu — but in English the nu goes into a helping word (do not → don't), not directly before the verb. And for He/She/It, it changes to doesn't — so the main verb goes back to have (not "hasn't").

Questions – Do you have…? / Does she have…?

StatementQuestionRomanian
I have a ticket.Do I have a ticket?Am eu un bilet?
You have a car.Do you have a car?Ai tu o mașină?
She has a sister.Does she have a sister?Are ea o soră?
They have a dog.Do they have a dog?Au ei un câine?
Pattern: Start the question with Do or Does, then the subject, then have.
Does is only for He / She / It — same rule as has.

1. I a new phone.
2. She two brothers.
3. They a beautiful garden.
4. He a black car.
5. We a small flat in the city.
6. The school a big library.

Adjectives are words that describe nouns — big, red, happy, old. In Romanian, adjectives change form depending on gender and number. In English, they never change — one form works for everything.

💡 The Big Difference from Romanian

In Romanian: un băiat frumos / o fată frumoasă / niște băieți frumoși — the adjective changes.

In English: a beautiful boy / a beautiful girl / beautiful boys — the adjective is always the same. No endings. No agreement. Ever.

Two Positions for Adjectives

📌 Before the noun
The adjective comes before the noun it describes.
"a big house"
"a red car"
"an old book" This is the most common position.
📌 After "to be"
The adjective comes after am / is / are.
"The house is big."
"The car is red."
"The book is old." Same adjective, different position.
Same adjective, two sentences:
"She has a beautiful garden." → adjective before noun.
"The garden is beautiful." → adjective after is.
Both are correct. Both mean the same thing.
Word order matters! In English the adjective always comes before the noun — never after.
"a big dog"    ❌ "a dog big"

4. They are (fericiți).
