🧠 The Smart Traveller Puzzle

You are travelling with your partner and your 10-year-old daughter. You have £500 for 2 nights. Which room do you book, and why is it possible? (Hint: read the hotel policies very carefully…)
The Classic Double Room — £149 × 2 nights = £298. The policies say "children under 12 stay free in their parents' room", so your daughter sleeps free! The Family Suite (£349 × 2 = £698) is over budget.

Before booking online, people often email the hotel with questions. Study the model — each part has a job to do.

✏️ Now write your own

Write an enquiry email to the Grand StayWell Hotel. Choose a different room and different dates. Ask two questions (ideas: dog? airport transfer? late check-out? swimming pool?). The checklist ticks itself as you write.

The final challenge — a real conversation. Your teacher plays the receptionist. No reading from the page: use the phrases you learned!

🎬 Scenario 1 – Checking In
You arrive at the Grand StayWell Hotel at 9 pm. You have a reservation for a Deluxe Double Room, 2 nights.
  • Greet the receptionist and give your name
  • Ask about breakfast (time? where?)
  • Ask for the Wi-Fi password
  • Ask what time check-out is
😱 Twist: The receptionist can't find your reservation! Stay calm, spell your surname letter by letter, and solve the problem.
🎬 Scenario 2 – Booking by Phone
You phone the hotel to book a room for your family (2 adults + 1 child, 3 nights in August).
  • Say what you need and ask for the price
  • Ask if the child stays free
  • Ask about parking and the swimming pool
  • Give your name and spell it
😱 Twist: The room you want is full on your dates. Ask what else is free and choose an alternative.
